Pathway
Guide U.S. expats through their filings, and through renunciation.
19 hr 39 min · 3 courses · 0 live classes · 1 optional extra
U.S. citizens and green-card holders owe U.S. tax returns wherever they live, and many living abroad have fallen behind: unfiled returns, unreported foreign accounts, uncertainty about what they owe. A smaller group wants to leave the U.S. tax system altogether by renouncing citizenship or giving up long-term residency, and that exit has its own rules and costs.
This pathway prepares you to serve both groups. You learn how residency is determined and how citizens abroad report their income using the foreign earned income exclusion and the foreign tax credit. You learn to identify and fix foreign account and asset reporting under the FBAR and Form 8938 rules. Then you work through expatriation: renunciation versus relinquishment, the tests that make someone a covered expatriate, the mark-to-market exit tax, and Form 8854.
The emphasis is on sequencing. Expatriating cleanly usually means first bringing five years of filings into compliance, and you'll learn how to plan that work with clients.
