Pathway
Help non-residents get the U.S. tax ID they need.
16 hr 5 min · 2 courses · 1 live class · 2 optional extras
An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number lets someone who can't get a Social Security number meet U.S. tax obligations: filing a return, claiming a treaty benefit, being claimed as a spouse or dependent, or receiving income from U.S. payers. Applications are paper-based and strict about documents, and a large share are rejected or suspended the first time.
This pathway trains you to prepare ITIN applications that are accepted. You learn who qualifies and under which reason code, how to complete Form W-7 line by line, which supporting documents the IRS accepts, and how to handle rejection and suspense letters and renewals. You then study the Certifying Acceptance Agent program, which lets authorised agents verify identity documents so clients don't have to post their original passports to the IRS.
The pathway finishes with Circular 230, because ITIN work is tax practice: the same standards of due diligence, confidentiality and conduct apply.
Tax and accounting professionals, bookkeepers and client-service staff outside the U.S. whose clients need an ITIN to file, claim treaty benefits or get paid by U.S. platforms.
Comfortable reading English-language tax forms. No prior U.S. tax experience required.
Complete the required courses and classes to earn the XCAPE Certificate in ITIN Practice.
